Staying Accountable
February 26, 2018 // William Boggs
Billy Graham was one of the greatest examples of a Godly minister. Throughout his life, he never fell into any kind of moral compromise. There was never a newsflash highlighting some great scandal that Billy Graham or the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association had been caught in. The main thing people ever heard about Billy Graham was his unwavering commitment to the Word of God, and seeing many all over the world come to salvation in Jesus Christ.
It seems as though Billy Graham always surrounded himself in his ministry with Godly men. He surrounded himself with those in Christ who would keep him accountable and sharpen him to become a more Godly man himself. He was a strong believer in accountability, and instituted in his ministry that a man was never once allowed to be in the same room or car alone with a woman. He wanted all chance of sexual sin or moral compromise to be taken away. Billy Graham never wavered in his preaching of the pure, profound Gospel of Jesus Christ. He never tried to add to or compromise His message. His goal in life was to tell as many people as he could across the world about the saving power of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Proverbs 27:17 reads, “Iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens [and influences] another [through discussions.]” Christian ministers, both men and women, need other Godly men or women to sharpen, edify, and admonish them. We see in the life of Billy Graham the result of a man who always surrounded himself with Godly men who held him accountable and sharpened him.
Many ministers try to do it alone in ministry. Some try to make a name for themselves or build a ministry empire, and they fail to have Godly men who can pour into them and hold them accountable. They get out on their own and think they are invincible and don’t need anybody to sharpen them. Yet, we see with
Billy Graham’s example, that even a solid man of God with huge influence should value accountability. He
still chose to humble himself and have other men surrounding him. He never wavered and He never compromised. I believe God honored and blessed his integrity, and prolonged his life.
